Description

Florida sells you sunshine. It doesn't sell you what's buried underneath. In this video, we count down 12 real Florida swamp towns hiding some of the darkest, strangest, and most suppressed stories in American history. From a hollow-earth cult in the mangroves to a racial massacre the state covered up for 60 years, these are the places the tourism board prays you never Google. Here's what we cover: #12 Ochopee — The smallest post office in America (61 sq ft) and a full-time Bigfoot research headquarters in the middle of Big Cypress Swamp. #11 Yeehaw Junction — Originally called "Jackass Crossing." Home to the only brothel ever listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Destroyed by a semi-truck hauling orange juice. #10 Cassadaga — The "Psychic Capital of the World." A community of certified mediums founded in 1894 by a man who followed a spirit guide into the Florida wilderness. #9 Carrabelle — The World's Smallest Police Station (a phone booth), a brutal WWII amphibious training base, and a swamp named after a man who said "I just came from Hell" before dying. #8 Estero — A hollow-earth cult called the Koreshan Unity, founded by a doctor who renamed himself Koresh. When he died, his followers kept his body in a bathtub waiting for resurrection. #7 Flamingo — Ground zero for the feather trade. Audubon warden Guy Bradley was shot and killed in 1905 trying to stop bird poaching. His killer walked free. #6 Frostproof — In 2020, three friends went catfishing at Lake Streety and were ambushed and murdered. One victim called his father to say "Help, daddy" before dying. #5 Belle Glade — The highest AIDS rate in America in the 1980s. And beneath the town, a mass grave of 674 Black hurricane victims from 1928 that went unmarked for 75 years. #4 Everglades City — Federal agents arrested nearly 80% of the town's adult male population in a single marijuana smuggling bust. 256 people indicted. $252 million in drugs seized. #3 Chokoloskee — Neighbors shot a suspected serial killer 33 times on the porch of the local trading post in 1910. Nobody was ever charged. #2 Marianna — The Dozier School for Boys operated for 111 years. Researchers found 55 unmarked graves. Boys died from gunshot wounds and blunt trauma. #1 Rosewood — A thriving Black community burned to the ground by a white mob in January 1923. The story was suppressed for nearly 60 years. Nine survivors eventually received the first reparations in U.S. history. 🔔 Subscribe for more real stories about life in America — the places that don't make the brochure. 👍 Like this video if you made it through all 12. 📌 REFERENCES & FURTHER READING Rosewood Massacre — History.com https://www.history.com/articles/rosewood-massacre Dozier School Excavation — University of South Florida https://usf.edu/news/2019/usf-researchers-begin-new-investigation-at-dozier-site.aspx Operation Everglades — U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida https://www.flmd.uscourts.gov/node/931 Operation Everglades — Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Everglades Edgar Watson & Chokoloskee — Visit Everglades City https://visitevergladescity.com/bloody-ed-watson-smallwoods-store/ Guy Bradley, First U.S. Wildlife Officer Killed — Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Bradley Koreshan State Park / Hollow Earth Cult — Miami New Times https://www.miaminewtimes.com/?p=40452180 Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp — National Register of Historic Places 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane & Mass Graves — Equal Justice Initiative Belle Glade AIDS Epidemic — CDC MMWR, 1986; Science, 1988 #Florida #SmallTowns #DarkHistory #TrueCrime #FloridaMan #AmericanHistory #Rosewood #EvergladesCity #HiddenHistory #SwampLife
