Why Tom Skerritt Chose a Remote Island Over Hollywood

Tom Skerritt was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces, known for Alien, Top Gun, and Picket Fences. But behind decades of success was a man who began questioning whether Hollywood was really where he wanted to spend his life. In 1992, Skerritt told a reporter that the joy of acting was largely gone. While audiences knew him as Captain Dallas and Viper, he was building a different life in the Pacific Northwest, far from the studios and the Hollywood machine. His connection to Lopez Island, where his second wife, Sue Oran, ran a Victorian-style bed-and-breakfast, was only one part of a much bigger story. His life increasingly centered on Seattle, where he helped develop independent filmmaking, co-founded TheFilmSchool, and later worked with wounded veterans through the Red Badge Project. Then, decades after questioning his career, Skerritt took on a leading role in East of the Mountains, helping prove that meaningful films could be made in the region he had come to call home. So why did Tom Skerritt choose a remote island over Hollywood? The truth is more complicated than a simple escape. This is the story of the life he built beyond the spotlight, the work he believed mattered, and the legacy he left behind. What is your favorite Tom Skerritt role — Alien, Top Gun, or Picket Fences?
