Description

A woman put her name on her brother's account eleven years ago so somebody could reach his money if he got sick. There's $9,000 in it. Not one dollar is hers. As far as the agency is concerned, every dollar belongs to her. That's not a mistake anyone made. It's the default rule. And here's what changed: the agency now runs an electronic search of financial institutions on essentially every new claim, regardless of what you report. There's no longer a dollar figure you can stay under. No letter, no phone call, no warning. Notice what every story in this video has in common. Nobody cheated. Every single person was either doing a kindness or receiving one, and every one of them is on the wrong side of a rule that reads generosity as wealth. I'm Kevin. I read the rules so you don't have to. Here's exactly what counts, what's protected, and how to be generous safely. ⚠️ SCOPE, STATED HONESTLY: This is about the needs-based program, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), where a resource limit has always been part of qualifying. If you receive retirement or disability benefits on your own work record, there is no resource limit and this search is not reaching your accounts. 🔹 THE JOINT ACCOUNT RULE: If your name is on an account, the starting position is that the ENTIRE balance is yours. Not half. But it's a presumption, not a verdict, and you can rebut it, with paper, not memory. Here's what wins, and why to build that file while the real owner can still sign it. 🔹 WHEN FAMILY HELP BECOMES A PROBLEM: Money deposited into your account counts. The one change that costs your family nothing and fixes it completely. 🔹 THE RULE THAT STOPPED PUNISHING YOU: Since September 30, 2024, food is no longer counted in in-kind support at all, from any source. Shelter still counts. If you've been refusing meals from your own family, the rule that scared you may not exist anymore. 🔹 WHAT THE SEARCH CAN'T TOUCH: Your home. One vehicle. Household goods. Your burial plot. A $1,500 burial fund IF kept separate. Tax refunds for 12 full months. Back payments for 9 months. ABLE accounts up to $100,000. 🔹 THE ONE MOMENT THAT DECIDES THE MONTH: Resources are measured at a single instant, the first moment of the first day. Not the average. Plus the warning about giving money away to get under the line. 🔹 SUSPENSION VS. TERMINATION: Going over doesn't end your benefit forever. But stay ineligible 12 consecutive months and the case terminates, and you start over as a brand new applicant. 🔹 THE SCAM ALREADY RUNNING: Nobody can shield your accounts from verification, pre-clear you, or handle it for a fee. That service does not exist. The fee is the story. Your number is the point. 💡 THE NUMBER THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING: The resource limit is $2,000 for one person, $3,000 for a couple, and it was last changed in 1989. Never indexed. Had it kept pace, it would sit above $5,000 today. The enforcement was modernized. The rule wasn't. 📞 HELPFUL CONTACTS: Social Security: 1-800-772-1213 | ssa.gov Free legal help for people 60+: eldercare.acl.gov | 1-800-677-1116 ABLE account information: ablenrc.org SOURCES: Social Security Administration Program Operations Manual (resources, joint accounts, AFI); SSA final rule omitting food from In-Kind Support and Maintenance calculations, effective September 30, 2024; SSA resource exclusion rules. Figures and policies are current at the time of recording and can change. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE to Kevin Senior Explains for plain-English breakdowns of the rules that quietly decide what happens to your money. ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: This video is for general educational purposes only and is not legal, financial, or benefits advice. SSI rules are complex and depend on individual circumstances. Always confirm your own situation directly with the Social Security Administration or a qualified benefits advocate before acting. 👨‍👩‍👧 SHARE THIS: If you know someone on SSI, or a family that helps someone on it, send them this. That one favor on a bank account is the thing almost nobody sees coming. #SSI #SocialSecurity #SupplementalSecurityIncome #SeniorFinance #JointAccount #ABLEaccount #BenefitsHelp #Caregiving #Disability #FixedIncome #Medicaid #ElderLaw
