The Duke Swapped Places With His Valet to Test His Staff — The Housemaid Saw Through Him on Day One

📚 My three novels + audiobooks — the longest story I've ever written: https://timelesslovebooks.com Phillida Stark had dusted the great barometer at Oldlea every morning for eight years, and she knew one rule better than any other: nobody below stairs ever touched the glass. Only family tapped it. Then, on the stormy June evening the new Duke of Bransdale came home after twelve years away, the duke's valet walked straight across the hall and tapped it twice — exactly the way the old duke used to. By midnight she knew the truth. The nervous gentleman everyone was bowing to was the valet, and the man blacking boots in the boot room was the duke. He had come in disguise to see the household he had been told was idle and dishonest, and meant to dismiss at Midsummer. Phillida agreed to keep his secret on one condition: that he judge them by what he saw, not by what he had been told. But the woman who kept the keys of Oldlea had her own plans for Midsummer, and the housemaid was first on her list. As the glass kept falling and a great storm gathered over the plain, one quiet woman and one proud man would learn that neither of them was much use alone. And when the house gathered in the hall for the reading of the will, every secret at Oldlea would come into the light. A tender regency tale of a housemaid who could read the sky, a duke hiding in his own house, and a father's letters that said far more than they seemed to.
