Description

Only two countries on Earth must cross TWO other countries to reach the sea: Liechtenstein (Switzerland, then Italy) and Uzbekistan (Afghanistan, then Pakistan). Switzerland needs one border, Italy. Kyrgyzstan needs only one too, China, yet its nearest sea is 1,564 km away: the farthest of any country. How it was counted: a country is landlocked when its land never touches the world ocean (the Caspian counts as a lake). Borders to cross = the fewest countries you must pass through to reach a country on the coast. Distance = the shortest straight line from the country to the ocean: Switzerland 155 km, Liechtenstein 298 km, Uzbekistan 1,284 km, Kyrgyzstan 1,564 km. How many borders does YOUR country need to cross to reach the sea? 👇 Earth images: NASA Blue Marble. Borders: Natural Earth. Relief: SRTM / GMTED elevation (public domain).
