Description
The Hindush Warrior Supporting the Throne of Xerxes I | Ancient Persian Relief
This remarkable stone relief comes from the monumental tomb of Xerxes I at Naqsh-e Rostam, near Persepolis, Iran, dating to the 5th century BCE. It depicts a representative of Hindush (the ancient Indus region), one of the peoples incorporated into the Achaemenid Persian Empire.
The figure stands with both arms raised, supporting the royal throne platform above. He wears a patterned headdress, a long beard, and a short garment, while a bow and quiver appear behind him. The carving forms part of a larger symbolic composition in which representatives of different subject peoples support the Persian king's throne, expressing the reach and authority of the Achaemenid Empire.
The Hindush region, associated with the Indus Valley and parts of the northwestern Indian subcontinent, became part of the Persian imperial system during the reign of Darius I. Such figures offer a fascinating glimpse into how the ancient Persian court represented the diverse peoples of its empire.
Location: Naqsh-e Rostam, Fars Province, Iran
Monument: Tomb of Xerxes I
Period: Achaemenid Persian Empire, 5th century BCE
Historical significance: A visual representation of the peoples and territories associated with the Persian royal empire.
Disclaimer: This post is intended for educational and historical purposes. The identification of the figure as a representative of Hindush follows the conventional interpretation of the throne-bearer figures in Achaemenid royal art. Details of individual figures' clothing and equipment should be interpreted cautiously, as some features are damaged and scholarly identifications rely on the wider monument and historical context.
