Description

Before you read on: everything I have learned in thirty-eight years of buying and pricing at estate sales, flea markets and antique mall booths, how to read a mark, how to tell a real piece from a copy, and the mistakes that cost families the most money, is in my books. They are written for the person standing at a jewelry box, a china cabinet or a table of boxes at a sale, wondering whether to keep it, sell it or leave it. Keep them beside you and check before you decide. You can get them here: https://mark-side-up.netlify.app I walked into a thrift shop this week, and on a low shelf by the register sat a glass jar packed to the lid with tangled old jewelry and a handwritten price tag. No signs, no sorting, no way to see what was really inside. So I bought it, took it home, and in this video I open it on camera and check every piece the way I have for thirty-eight years. I am Roy Danforth, and I have been buying and pricing estate sales, flea markets and antique mall booths across the Ohio Valley and the Midwest since long before thrift shops started selling mystery jars. I will be honest with you from the start: most jars like this are mostly junk, and I am not going to pretend every one hides a fortune. But once in a while a signed piece, a real stone or a bit of genuine gold ends up buried in the tangle, because the person who filled the jar did not turn anything over. So I go through it piece by piece. I look at the back for a signature, check the clasp and the construction, test the metal, look at how the stones are set, and tell you what is real, what is costume, and what is worth a closer look. You will see exactly how I work through a pile like this in a few minutes, and the same checks work on the jewelry in your own box or the next jar you spot on a thrift shop shelf. Do not pay a collector's price for something you have not checked, and do not walk past a mystery jar without at least picking it up. If you enjoy this kind of video, consider subscribing, because I go through a new box, jar or drawer every week. And stay to the end, because the last piece out of the jar is the one that made me stop and look twice.
