Shailputri means daughter of the mountain. Born to Himavan, king of the Himalayas, she is Sati returned, the same Shakti who comes back to Shiva as Parvati. She rides Nandi the bull, holds the trishul in her right hand and a lotus in her left, with the crescent moon at her brow. In the yogic tradition she is the Devi of the Muladhara, the root, which is why Navratri begins with her: every journey of Shakti starts at the foundation.
