Description
For a few remarkable decades in the 1800s, the green hills of Staten Island’s North Shore were home to some of America’s richest families, and the grandest estate of them all was Bay Villa. In 1868 Anson Phelps Stokes, born into the Phelps Dodge fortune and determined to build on it, bought this Second Empire mansion high above New York Harbor in the village of New Brighton as a country home for his growing family.
