Description

Five states passed laws between 2023 and 2025 that turned vehicle dwelling into a criminal offense with immediate towing. Texas HB 1925 allows cities to impound after two hours. 📖 The book I mention in the video — The Street Survival Manual: danny.myreads.store Florida's SB 1530 made sleeping in a vehicle a second-degree misdemeanor with up to 60 days in jail. Tennessee, Missouri, and Idaho followed with statutes that authorize police to tow on sight if they believe you're living in the vehicle. Idaho used to tolerate van dwellers on BLM land and in city limits. In February 2025, Boise expanded its camping ban to include any vehicle used for habitation. By May, the state legislature passed HB 489, giving every municipality the power to adopt parking restrictions and 24-hour towing. Within three months, Coeur d'Alene, Twin Falls, and Pocatello all had new ordinances. A man who parked outside a Walmart in Nampa for eight months woke up to a tow truck in September. The impound fee was $780 and he had 72 hours to leave the city. Ten states moved the opposite direction. Oregon, Washington, and Colorado passed safe parking legislation with state funding. South Dakota clarified that living in a vehicle on public land is legal if you follow time limits. Nevada and Arizona expanded rest area protections. Minnesota launched a 200-vehicle pilot program with heated restrooms and weekly social workers. The legal gap between the safe states and the enforcement states is wider in 2026 than it has ever been, and it is still growing.
