Description
Black stuff in your toilet tank? Here is how to clean a toilet tank the way the manufacturers' own manuals say. The viral hydrogen peroxide hack is half right, and the bleach tablet is the one thing seven toilet and tank-part makers warn against in writing.
In this video: a 10-minute food coloring test that shows if your toilet is leaking. How to tell slimy mold from mineral stains and a rotting flapper with one gloved fingertip. Why two cups of peroxide poured into a full tank end up at less than a tenth of their strength. Why washing soda builds crust instead of removing it. How to fix a weak flush by sending vinegar down the overflow tube to the clogged rim jets. And how to get rid of a toilet bowl ring, whether it is black, orange or pink.
If your toilet runs, your flush has gone weak, or the ring keeps coming back, start here.

🔎 WHAT THE DOCUMENTS SAY
• Kohler: do not use in-tank cleaners; chlorine can seriously damage the fittings, and it voids the warranty. American Standard: no chlorine pucks, or no warranty. TOTO and Gerber: do not use them. Mansfield will not cover the damage.
• Korky and Fluidmaster will not cover it either. Fluidmaster says bleach tablets can make tank parts leak within a year or two.
• EPA: a leaky toilet can waste up to 200 gallons a day, and a worn flapper up to 900 gallons a month. Replace the flapper at least every five years.
• CDC: 3% hydrogen peroxide is an effective surface disinfectant. But in data the CDC cites, it took 6 to 8 minutes to kill a common cold virus, and much longer when diluted.
• Minnesota Department of Health lists manganese as a cause of black stains on toilets.
• John Koeller's 2004 study of 892 toilets in California homes: flapper leaks showed up whether people used tank tablets or not. His report still calls chlorine tablets the greatest threat to flapper rubber.
• North Dakota State University: washing soda softens water by turning calcium and magnesium into solid particles. That is how crust forms, not how it leaves.
• Clorox warns that bleach mixed with an acid releases a gas that may be fatal.
🧰 THE WHOLE FIX
Tonight: a few drops of food coloring in the tank, blue tablet out, wait ten minutes. Color in the bowl means a leak, and a new flapper is $7 to $17 and ten minutes.
Slime: water off, flush the tank empty, spray peroxide straight on, ten minutes, brush, refill.
Crust: rubber gloves on, tablet out, flush a few times, then white vinegar. Check your manual first, because Gerber warns against acid on its plastic parts. Orange crust is iron: a rust remover like Iron Out, never together with vinegar.
Weak flush: block the rim holes, pour hot (not boiling) vinegar down the overflow tube, leave it overnight, then poke each hole and the jet.
The ring: water off, flush, then a soaked pumice stone (TOTO asks for a non-scratch pad instead).
Pink ring: bleach cleaner in the bowl, never in the tank, never on a vinegar day.
About $14 a year in tablets buys a bowl that looks clean. A worn flapper can leak up to $180 a year in water and sewer charges. The basic kit starts around $18, and HomeAdvisor puts a plumber at $100 to $400 just for a running toilet.
