Description
This week a lot of people on X said Anthropic killed git. Here's what actually happened.
Anthropic went from about 2,500 merged changes a day in May to over 30,000 a day in September, mostly because of how much code Claude writes. Their monorepo's main branch history is almost 100 GB, and CI checks it out about 25 million times a day. Git's "every clone is a full copy" design stopped fitting, so a team of seven built Scion, an in-house source control system where the server does the work, and moved the monorepo over in five months.
In this video: why git struggled at Anthropic's scale, how Scion works, the speed numbers Anthropic published (their own measurements), what Hacker News and X thought, and why your git setup doesn't change. Anthropic says Scion is not a general replacement for git, it isn't open source, and they don't plan to release it.
