Description

seawater contains a very high amount of dissolved salt, minerals and impurities, so converting it into drinking water is not simple filtration. a large desalination plant must first collect seawater safely from the ocean, protect marine life, remove suspended particles, control algae and bacteria, and prepare the water before it reaches the reverse osmosis membrane. inside the plant, seawater passes through intake screens, pump stations, coagulation, flocculation, air flotation, media filtration, activated carbon treatment and cartridge filtration. even after all these stages, the salt remains almost unchanged, which is why high-pressure reverse osmosis becomes the most important part of the process. reverse osmosis uses strong pressure to push water molecules through a thin polyamide membrane while leaving most salts, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses and other impurities behind. in large plants, spiral-wound membrane elements are installed inside pressure vessels, where clean permeate water is separated from concentrated brine. the brine leaving the ro system still carries high pressure energy. an energy recovery device transfers this pressure to incoming seawater, reducing the load on the main high-pressure pump and improving the energy efficiency of the desalination plant. finally, the concentrated brine is discharged carefully through outfall pipelines and diffuser nozzles, while the clean water is remineralised using co₂ and limestone before chlorine is added for safe storage and distribution. large desalination plants can produce hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of water every day, but energy consumption remains one of the biggest engineering challenges. topics seawater intake and marine life protection pre-treatment before reverse osmosis coagulation, flocculation and air flotation media filtration, activated carbon and cartridge filtration high-pressure pump and reverse osmosis process spiral-wound ro membrane working permeate water and concentrated brine separation energy recovery device working brine discharge and ocean mixing remineralisation and final water treatment
