Description

Harlem says he was a millionaire at fifteen. There is no charge, no conviction, and not one line of newsprint to prove it. Not the 1950s TV cowboy. A real person, in Harlem. In 1969, twelve-year-old Walter Vandermeer died of a heroin overdose in a Harlem rooming house — the youngest child on record to die that way in New York. One of them is in the archives. The other survives in a single clause of a federal court opinion — a clause about his son, who killed a twenty-year-old in a D.C. alley in 1990. Everything documented here belongs to the son. For the father, I found nothing.
