Description

Who decided 18 was the adult age, and why does the law flip you from child to grown-up on a single birthday? This deep dive into the history of adulthood breaks down where the number 18 actually came from, why you can be trusted to vote and die for your country but not buy a beer, and why the whole idea of a single adult age is far newer and more arbitrary than you think. At 17 you're a child in the eyes of the law. One birthday later you can vote, sign a contract, and be sent to war, and nothing about you actually changed overnight. This video traces where that line came from and how strange it really is. It starts in ancient Rome, which had no fixed age at all, where a father simply decided when his son was ready to trade his boyhood toga for a man's, usually somewhere between 14 and 17. Then to the number 18 itself, which locked in not through careful study of human development but through war: Franklin Roosevelt dropped the draft age to 18 in World War II, and the slogan "old enough to fight, old enough to vote" eventually forced the voting age down to match in 1971, in the fastest-ratified amendment in American history. Then the contradiction nobody can explain away: the drinking age of 21, which exists only because Ronald Reagan threatened in 1984 to withhold highway money from any state that didn't comply, meaning the same government that hands you a rifle at 18 says you can't be trusted with a beer for three more years. And finally the science, which says none of these numbers are right anyway, since the brain doesn't finish wiring itself until around 25. The line was never drawn by biology. It was drawn by war, by politics, and by highway funding, and then we all agreed to pretend it was natural. If you got something out of this one, drop a like and subscribe for more. I dig into a new curious question like this regularly. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 — The birthday that changes nothing 0:54 — Rome had no number at all 3:17 — How war picked 18 5:25 — Fight at 18, d
