Description
Sometimes, solitude is not something to run away from.
At times, solitude offers a chance to discover who we truly are—when there is no one left to entertain us, validate us, or fill the silence around us.
In a world that constantly tells us we must be sociable, stay connected, and share every moment of our lives with others, choosing solitude can hold a deeper meaning.
The Stoics believed that a person should be able to find stability and peace within themselves, rather than making their tranquility entirely dependent on the presence of others.
But what does solitude reveal about you?
For one thing, it suggests you have learned not to flee from silence.
When you are alone, there are no voices from others to drown out your thoughts. In the silence, your worries, fears, desires, and even your inner contradictions become more apparent.
Many people run from this silence because confronting oneself is not always easy.
Yet, those who can spend time alone with themselves gain the opportunity to know themselves better.
A second insight solitude offers is that you may not always need the approval of others to feel worthy.
If you only feel good about yourself when others praise you, then the presence of others becomes the source of your self-worth.
Stoicism, however, reminds us that human worth should not depend entirely on things beyond our control—including the opinions of others.
The third point is this:
Solitude can enhance your ability to make choices.
When you are constantly surrounded by others, you might unconsciously align your decisions with their expectations. But when you are alone, you have the opportunity to ask yourself:
"What do I truly want?"
"Did I choose this path myself?"
"Or am I simply doing what others expect of me?"
Sometimes, stepping away from the clamor of the world allows you to hear your own true voice again.
Yet, there is an important point to consider.
Solitude is not always a sign of strength.
If solitude stems from fear, resentment, past wounds, or an inability to connect with others, it may resemble isolation rather than conscious, chosen solitude.
Stoicism is not meant to cut a person off from others.
The goal is not to need no one at all.
The goal is to be able to live among others—to love and connect—while not tethering your identity and peace of mind entirely to them.
You must be able to find calm both in the company of others and in solitude.
For if you feel worthy only in the presence of others, you will always fear being alone.
And if you feel secure only in solitude, you might gradually lose your genuine connection to the world.
Balance is what matters.
So, if you find yourself alone more often these days, perhaps you need not immediately view it as a problem.
This period of your life might be an opportunity to know yourself better.
To read.
To reflect.
To rebuild your character.
To understand what truly matters to you.
And perhaps most importantly, to learn to find—within yourself—some of the peace you once sought from others.
Seneca, one of the great Stoic philosophers, wrote extensively on the importance of the inner life and the quality of the human mind. From a Stoic perspective, the primary issue is not the external events themselves, but rather how we respond to them.
So, the next time you find yourself alone, instead of immediately reaching for your phone to fill the silence, pause for a few minutes.
Be with yourself.
Listen to your thoughts.
Ask yourself:
"If no one were going to judge me, how would I live?"
The answer might reveal things about you that had been lost for years amidst the noise of others.
Solitude, when chosen consciously, can become a space for growth.
Not an escape from the world;
But an opportunity to return to yourself.
And perhaps this is what no one tells you about being alone:
Sometimes, when you step away from the crowd, you find the chance—for the first time—to understand who you truly are.
