Indian forces went in at 4 a.m. from two sides: Solapur (west) and Vijayawada (east). • Hyderabad State: about 2,14,190 km² (bigger than England + Scotland together, 2,08,189 km²), about 1.63 crore people (1941), its own currency, army, railway and stamps, and revenue of over 9 crore rupees a year. • Mir Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam, was on the cover of Time magazine on 22 February 1937 as "the world's richest man". • The Jacob Diamond (184.75 carats): the Nizam found it in the toe of his father's shoe and used it as a paperweight. The Government of India bought it from the Nizam's trust in 1995 for about US$13 million; it is kept in the Reserve Bank of India's vault in Mumbai. • The Standstill Agreement (November 1947): no military action for one year. • The Razakars, a private militia of about 2,00,000 led by Qasim Razvi. Hyderabad took its case to the UN Security Council in August 1948 and withdrew it after the operation. • 6 September 1948: the skirmish at Kodad. • Day by day: Naldurg and the Bori bridge taken intact, Tuljapur, Umarga (61 km in by 15:15), the east front at Kodad and Munagala; Tempest air strikes and Rajeshwar, street fighting in Osmanabad, Aurangabad surrendering; the Musi bridge blown, the token resistance at Mominabad; the minefield near Zahirabad; Bidar, Chityal and Hingoli. • Ceasefire at 5 p.m. on 17 September; on 18 September Maj. Gen. El Edroos surrendered to Gen. J. N. Chaudhuri. • Casualties: fewer than 10 Indian soldiers killed; 807 Hyderabad soldiers and 1,373 Razakars killed. The Sunderlal Committee estimated 30,000-40,000 civilians killed in the violence during and after the operation. • 23 September 1948: the Nizam's first radio address blamed Qasim Razvi's group. • The Nizam was Rajpramukh of Hyderabad State from 26 January 1950 to 31 October 1956. In 1956 Hyderabad State was split among Andhra Pradesh, Bombay State (later Maharashtra) and Mysore State (now Karnataka). He died on 24 February 1967; about a million people came to his funeral. The map's old-state borders are drawn from today's districts, so they are approximate.
