Description
In 1937, one boxed dinner promised to feed a family of four for about nineteen cents, and it sold millions in its first year. The trick that made it work is something most of us now pay extra to avoid. Here are 20 forgotten Depression-era dinners that still save money today, plus the simple money psychology behind each one.
A lot of what we spend on food isn't about hunger. It's about how dinner makes us feel: proud, comforted, or simply done with a long day. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's bare-bones food budget for a family of four is close to $1,000 a month.
Families in the 1930s faced something much harder. About 9,000 American banks failed between 1930 and 1933, according to the FDIC, and many families lost their savings overnight. The hardship was real, and nobody should pretend those were "the good old days." But those families got clever about three things, and every one of them still works in a modern kitchen.
1. EAT WHAT OTHERS PASS UP: Liver and onions, chicken back soup, red beans and rice, pasta e fagioli, chili stretched with beans, Spam fritters and tuna wiggle. These cheap dinner ideas are built on foods with a bad reputation and a great price. Many of us pick food partly for what it says about us. Our grandparents picked it for what it gave them.
2. MAKE A LITTLE LOOK LIKE A LOT: Stuffed cabbage rolls, stuffed peppers, vegetable barley soup, fried cornmeal mush, corn fritters, leftover fried rice and the potato and egg skillet. Studies on eating show we judge how full we'll feel partly by how much food we see. Rice, barley, cornmeal and potatoes fill the plate cheaply, and a little meat adds the flavor.
3. COMFORT THAT COSTS PENNIES: Boxed macaroni and cheese, Welsh rarebit, milk toast, tomato gravy and biscuits, pancakes for dinner and the hot dog and potato skillet. When we're stressed, many of us feel we deserve a treat, and today a treat usually means spending money. These dinners meet the same need for a tiny fraction of the cost.
Then we do the math. If a typical home-cooked dinner costs your family about $15 and many of these cost around $6, making just three a week could help you save money on groceries. That's around $27 a week, or roughly $1,400 a year, without giving up a single takeout night.
The trick: Depression families paid for the food, and nothing else. They didn't pay to look successful, they didn't pay for big piles of meat, and they didn't pay for comfort. They cooked it.
