The tragedy claimed thousands of lives, devastated the Kedarnath valley, andthe main temple was saved only bya massive rock ( Bheem Shila ) held in place behind the temple. Time of disaster: Night of June 16, 2013, when heavy rains and cloudbursts wreaked havoc in Kedarnath and its surrounding areas. Reason: Chorabari Glacier (Chorabari Lake) above Kedarnath broke, releasing huge amount of water, debris and ice, causing a sudden rise in the water level of Mandakini River. Destruction: Hotels, dharamshalas, and other buildings in Kedarnath, Gaurikund, and Rambada were swept away by the debris. Thousands of pilgrims, locals, and priests were affected by this devastating flood. Miraculous Rescue: During the disaster, a huge boulder (now called 'Bheem Shila') got washed away and stopped right behind the temple, dividing the flood water and debris into two parts, preventing any major damage to the Kedarnath temple. Aftermath: It was one of the worst natural disasters in independent India, claiming thousands of lives and leaving thousands missing and untraceable. Relief and Rescue Operations: Following the disaster, the Indian Army, NDRF, ITBP and other security forces launched "Operation Surya Hope" and rescued thousands of stranded pilgrims.
