Description

Why Purple Animals Almost Don’t Exist. Purple is everywhere in flowers, yet it is remarkably rare across the animal kingdom. The reason comes down to pigments, structural color, evolution, physics, and the strange ways animals manipulate light. Plants can produce purple using anthocyanins, molecules whose color can shift depending on chemistry, acidity, and metal ions. Animals never evolved that same pigment system. Instead, most rely on pigments such as melanin and carotenoids, which are much better at producing blacks, browns, reds, oranges, and yellows than true purple. So the animals that do appear purple have to find other solutions. This video explores how violet-backed starlings build microscopic structures that manipulate light, why purple emperor butterflies only flash violet from a narrow viewing angle, why mammals have never evolved naturally purple fur, and how the mandrill creates something that can look purple without actually producing purple at all. We also look at the Indian purple frog, why living lobsters can appear dark blue-purple before turning orange-red when cooked, how the violet sea snail Janthina janthina steals pigment from its food, and how ancient sea snails produced Tyrian purple, one of the most valuable dyes in human history. And then there is the strangest possibility of all: billions of years before forests covered Earth in green, some researchers have proposed that retinal-based microorganisms may once have made large parts of the planet appear purple. So why are purple animals so rare? Animals largely lack the chemistry to make the color directly, the physics required to create violet structural color can be unusually demanding, and much of animal evolution happened in environments where purple offered little advantage. The Purple Earth idea discussed in this video is a scientific hypothesis about the possible early evolution of retinal-based phototrophy, not an established reconstruction of exactly how Earth looked billions of years ago. #PurpleAnimals #AnimalScience #Evolution #StructuralColor #Biology #AnimalFacts #NatureFacts #ScienceExplained
