📘 Get the guide → The exact forms, phone scripts, and deadlines Social Security, Medicare, your bank & the IRS never explain in plain English: https://www.franklinlaw.shop
You were told no once. Maybe it was a phone call. Maybe a letter. Maybe a woman behind a window who glanced at one line on your form and shook her head. Over the limit. And you haven't asked since.
Here's what nobody went back to tell you. That answer wasn't wrong. It was probably correct on the day it was given. It has simply expired. Every year on October 1, the numbers behind several kinds of help are thrown out and replaced with new ones, and your no was an answer to a question nobody is asking anymore.
And it's worse than that. The number they looked at that day is very often not the number that decides it at all, especially once you're past 60, when a handful of rules quietly turn in your favor and nobody behind that window is required to mention a single one of them.
I'm Kevin, and I read the rules nobody reads out loud. Five expired refusals, and the five sentences that reopen them.
🔹 THE THREE QUESTIONS: Every office is really asking what comes in, what goes out, and what you own. Most people answer the first one, compare it to a limit they half remember, and hang up. They refuse themselves on question one of three.
🔹 THE TEST THAT DOESN'T APPLY TO YOU: If your household includes someone 60 or older, the gross income test for food help is skipped entirely. The number that turns most older people away at the door is a test they were never supposed to be given.
🔹 THE SUBTRACTIONS THAT ERASE YOUR INCOME: Medical costs above $35 a month come off, including your Part B premium, copays, dental, glasses, hearing aids and trips to appointments. And for an older household, housing costs come off with no cap at all.
🔹 "I HAVE SAVINGS, SO I WOULDN'T QUALIFY": Your home doesn't count. Your IRA and retirement accounts don't count. In most states one car doesn't count. And the majority of states have dropped the savings test altogether.
🔹 THE HEATING CALL: Priority windows that let older applicants in first, income limits far higher than people assume, and the link that makes a heating approval raise your food benefit too.
🔹 THE COUNTY CALL: Exemptions, freezes, deferrals and refunds for older homeowners. Ask for all four by name, because the clerk will usually only tell you about the one you ask about. Renters in several states qualify too.
🔹 THE CALL WORTH THE MOST: The Medicare Savings Programs pay your Part B premium for you, $202.90 a month back in your deposit, and qualifying usually unlocks Extra Help with drug costs as well. Ask to be screened for every level.
🔹 IF YOU GET A FRESH NO: Never accept it on the phone. Get it in writing with the reason, and know you generally have 90 days to request a fair hearing. A surprising share of refusals are simply arithmetic done wrong.
💡 BOTTOM LINE: Of all the adults over 60 who qualify for food help, only about half receive it. Not because they were refused, because they refused themselves. Every figure here is published. But an office waits for you. It doesn't come looking.
📞 WHO TO CALL:
Your state SNAP office and state Medicaid office
Find your Area Agency on Aging: eldercare.acl.gov | 1-800-677-1116
Free, independent Medicare counseling (SHIP): shiphelp.org
Your county assessor or appraisal district
⚠️ NEVER PAY: Every program here is free to apply for. No application fees, nothing upfront. Anyone charging to file your homestead exemption, speed up heating assistance, or check your Medicare eligibility is standing between you and the program with their hand out.
SOURCES: USDA Food and Nutrition Service SNAP cost-of-living adjustments; Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (LIHEAP); state and county property tax relief programs. States set much of this themselves, so your figures may differ. Confirm with your own state before acting.
🔔 SUBSCRIBE for plain-English breakdowns of the rules that quietly decide what you're owed.
⚠️ DISCLAIMER: This video is for general educational purposes only and is not financial, legal, or benefits advice. Program rules and limits vary significantly by state and change annually. Always confirm your own eligibility directly with the agency that runs the program.
👨👩👧 SHARE WITH FAMILY: The people who most need these calls are often the least able to make them. Most of these offices let you act for someone else as an authorized representative.
