Description
Why can the Nenets live in a tent at -40°C without freezing?
Deep in the frozen landscapes of northern Yamal, winter temperatures can fall to -40°C. Yet the Nenets continue to live, travel, and raise their families in a traditional shelter known as a chum.
From the outside, the chum looks surprisingly simple. But its ability to withstand extreme cold comes from the way its materials and living space work together.
In this documentary, Hidden Earth explores how layers of reindeer hide and fur, trapped air, clothing, fire, and the careful distribution of warmth help create a livable space in one of the coldest environments on Earth.
But the story goes beyond keeping warm. The chum is designed to adapt to the environment rather than fight against it. It can be dismantled, transported with the reindeer herd, and rebuilt as the Nenets move across the Yamal tundra in search of seasonal grazing grounds.
This is a story about extreme cold, traditional knowledge, reindeer herding, human adaptation, and a way of life shaped by the Arctic environment.
At Hidden Earth, we uncover the geography, science, and engineering behind some of the world's most extraordinary places and natural phenomena.
Every documentary reveals the hidden forces shaping our planet through cinematic storytelling, stunning visuals, and clear, engaging explanations.
Discover the world beneath the surface.
