Description

🔗 93 things every Appalachian grandfather knew. How many are left in you? https://burlsizemore.com My cousin Delmer Sizemore left this holler in nineteen sixty two with a cardboard suitcase and a bus ticket to Dayton, Ohio. He stayed gone for forty one years. When he came home, sick and knowing it, he sat on my porch and counted off the things the city never took out of him. There were seventeen of them. If you grew up in these mountains, or your mama did, or your daddy did, you have most of them too. Your children have noticed them. The people you married have noticed them. You fold the good wrapping paper and put it away. You fix a thing before you ever think about buying a new one. You clean your plate. You are awake in a dark kitchen at a quarter past four without an alarm. You set one more plate than there are chairs. You say sir and ma am to a man half your age. You keep a little money where nobody knows, and you can sit in the quiet without needing to fill it. And you still leave the porch light burning for somebody who is not coming. The world calls some of these cheap, or stubborn, or cold. They are none of those things, and I will tell you what they really are, one by one, with the story of where each one came from. My grandfather kept the farm ledger for most of his life, and down in the margins, in pencil, he wrote how a thing was done. A few years back I sat down with that ledger and wrote out ninety three of the things he knew how to do with his hands, the fixing and the making do, the way he would have told it to you on the porch. So tell me down below. Where did you grow up, and which one of the seventeen do you still catch yourself doing? https://burlsizemore.com
