The Triumph 1300 was a bold departure for a company known for traditional British cars. In 1965, Triumph introduced its first front-wheel-drive model, hoping to challenge the growing popularity of cars like the Mini and the BMC 1100. But the engineering experiment took Triumph in a direction it would eventually abandon.
Designed by Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, the Triumph 1300 looked like a smaller relative of the elegant Triumph 2000. It offered four doors, a comfortable interior, and a more upmarket character than many small family cars of the period. But its most important feature was hidden beneath the bonnet.
Instead of using the familiar rear-wheel-drive layout found in cars like the Triumph Herald, the 1300 sent power to the front wheels. Its 1,296cc four-cylinder engine was mounted longitudinally above the gearbox, creating an unusual arrangement that differed from the transverse-engine layout used by the Mini.
This was Triumph's attempt to combine practicality, comfort, and modern front-wheel-drive engineering in one compact saloon. The result was a distinctive car with sophisticated suspension and a different driving character from the company's traditional models.
However, the Triumph 1300 faced formidable competition. The Mini had already demonstrated the packaging advantages of front-wheel drive, while the BMC 1100 range was attracting buyers with its clever use of interior space. Triumph had entered the same technical territory, but with its own interpretation of how a small front-wheel-drive car should be engineered.
The story became even more interesting when Triumph changed direction. In 1970, the 1300 evolved into the Triumph 1500, still with front-wheel drive. Later, the design was reworked for rear-wheel drive, giving rise to the Triumph Toledo and the popular Triumph Dolomite range.
That reversal makes the Triumph 1300 a fascinating chapter in British automotive history. An ambitious engineering decision had shaped a whole family of cars, yet Triumph ultimately moved away from the layout that had made the original model so unusual.
In this episode, we explore the history of the Triumph 1300, Giovanni Michelotti's design, the unusual engine-and-gearbox arrangement, and why Triumph experimented with front-wheel drive before returning to a more traditional layout.
Was the Triumph 1300 ahead of its time, or was it an expensive detour? And why did a company willing to challenge convention eventually abandon its front-wheel-drive experiment?
Discover the story of the Triumph 1300 — the British saloon that took Triumph in a new direction, then helped shape the cars that followed.
