Description

What does a plus sign sound like? Or infinity? Or pi? In this video, I turn 35 of the most famous math symbols into sound using custom data sonification. As each symbol's real outline is traced, its vertical position is continuously mapped to an exponential pitch scale, so every curve, corner and straight line plays its own melody in real time. From the everyday + − × ÷ and =, to the elegant ∞, π, √, ∑ and ∫, to the symbols of logic and set theory like ∀, ∃, ∈, ∪, ∩ and ∅, every symbol has its own sonic fingerprint. Each one comes with the year it was first used, the mathematician who introduced it, what it means, and a fun fact: did you know the equals sign was invented in 1557 because "no two things can be more equal" than two parallel lines? This is an audio-visual experiment combining mathematics, history, geometry, signal processing and procedural animation into an oddly satisfying experience. Whether you're into math, science, history, creative coding, or simply enjoy mesmerizing visuals and unusual sounds, there's something here for you. If you enjoy these kinds of projects, leave a comment with your favourite math symbol and whether it sounded the way you expected (and which symbols or shapes you'd like to hear next), give the video a like, and subscribe for more sonification experiments and creative coding content! ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 Plus + 0:10 Minus − 0:20 Times × 0:30 Division ÷ 0:41 Equals = 0:51 Not Equal ≠ 1:01 Approximately ≈ 1:12 Less Than 1:22 Greater Than 1:32 Less or Equal ≤ 1:43 Plus-Minus ± 1:53 Infinity ∞ 2:03 Pi π 2:13 Square Root √ 2:24 Sum ∑ 2:34 Integral ∫ 2:44 Partial Derivative ∂ 2:55 Delta ∆ 3:05 Nabla ∇ 3:15 Percent % 3:26 Factorial ! 3:36 Element Of ∈ 3:46 Union ∪ 3:56 Intersection ∩ 4:07 For All ∀ 4:17 There Exists ∃ 4:27 Empty Set ∅ 4:38 Therefore ∴ 4:48 Perpendicular ⊥ 4:58 Product ∏ 5:09 Proportional ∝ 5:19 Congruent ≡ 5:29 Aleph ℵ 5:39 Subset ⊂ 5:50 Phi φ (the golden ratio) ABOUT THE PROJECT & CODE This animation was created entirely in Python using Manim, the mathematical animation engine originally developed by 3Blue1Brown. Each outline is the symbol's real shape from the Cambria Math typeface, the font used for equations in Microsoft Word, with every contour kept. Symbols made of separate parts, like ÷ or =, are traced part by part, just like writing them by hand. As the outline is drawn, its vertical position is mapped exponentially to frequency (roughly 100 Hz–2000 Hz) to match human pitch perception. The synthesizer combines a predominantly square wave with a subtle sine wave for added warmth, while dynamic vibrato is scaled according to the traced position to emphasize the character of each symbol. Every frame of both the animation and audio is generated algorithmically: no notes or melodies were composed manually. What you hear is the math itself. #DataSonification #Math #Mathematics #MathSymbols #Pi #Infinity #Sonification #Manim #Python #CreativeCoding #MathAnimation #MathArt #OddlySatisfying #GenerativeArt #SoundDesign #Visualization #STEM #MathHistory #Geometry #ProceduralAnimation #AudioVisualization
