Description

On October 15, 2026, at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, Tesla showed the new Roadster. It drove up a curved ramp, hung upside down, jumped over a row of parked Teslas, and ran 0–60 mph in 0.81 seconds on camera. Elon Musk posted: "Turns out the future does have flying cars." So is it a flying car? I went through Tesla's own posts and the clips from the event and explain the three tricks behind the stunts: suction fans, cold-gas thrusters (just compressed air, no fuel) and why the tires stop being the limit. Then I do the math on how long it can actually stay in the air. The flight-time numbers are my own estimate, not Tesla's. Tesla hasn't shared a weight, a tank pressure or a flight time. I assumed a ~1,500 kg car, ~600 liters of air at ~300 bar (about 190 kg of air) and ~600 m/s exhaust speed. That gives roughly 7–8 seconds of hover in total, or about 1.5 seconds at the reported 80 kN full thrust. Facts used: - Trims, prices and specs: Tesla's posts on X after the event (Performance $50k reservation, Thrust $250k deposit, Rocket invite-only, production 2028, no price yet) - 600 liters of compressed air: reported by TechCrunch; 80,000 N thrust: reported in SlashGear's live blog - Alef Aeronautics details: Electrek - Reactions: Fred Lambert (Electrek) on X, Gene Munster via Yahoo Finance, M.C.A. Hogarth and Eric Jiang on X Clips and posts (all from X): - Tesla: https://x.com/Tesla/status/2110913438293647789, https://x.com/Tesla/status/2110926164306931860, https://x.com/Tesla/status/2110963770763649487, https://x.com/Tesla/status/2104647484169728442 - Elon Musk: https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2110913107094606330 - Sawyer Merritt: https://x.com/SawyerMerritt/status/2110901817441948006, https://x.com/SawyerMerritt/status/2110907551370137605, https://x.com/SawyerMerritt/status/2110908481087680614, https://x.com/SawyerMerritt/status/2110878116562588131 - Livestream clip via stevenmarkryan: https://x.com/stevenmarkryan/status/2110904775814660103 - Fred Lambert: https://x.com/FredLambert/status/2110911362738078104 - M.C.A.
