Description
On a granite ledge the size of a car hood, two miles above the southern Andes, a single Andean condor chick named Wayra must survive seven months — from egg to first flight. Her parents are the largest flying birds in the Americas, nearly eleven feet across, and they cannot help her the way a hawk or an eagle could: their feet have no grip. They cannot strike, cannot carry, cannot fight.
So the only thing this pair did to guard their chick, they did before the egg was ever laid — they chose an address no climber should reach. But something is coming up the wall anyway. An egg is stolen by a mountain caracara. A culpeo fox pulls himself onto the ledge. And a high-altitude storm arrives where the hail falls sideways.

The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is the largest flying bird in the Americas, with a wingspan up to about 10.5 feet and a weight up to 33 pounds. It builds no nest at all — a single egg rests on bare rock on an inaccessible ledge as high as 16,000 feet. Because the blunt, walking feet cannot carry food, parents feed the chick beak-to-beak by regurgitation, and a pair raises just one chick every two years. The young bird stays at the nest for six to ten months, and adults are so efficient they flap for only about one percent of their flight time — gliding more than 100 miles without a single wingbeat.
Some scenes were visualized with AI because the most fragile Andean condor moments are almost impossible to film safely: an egg carried off the ledge by a mountain caracara, a culpeo fox creeping onto a two-mile-high nest, both parents spreading their wings into a wall against sideways hail, and a seven-month-old chick stepping off the cliff for a flight she has never tried. AI was used as a careful documentary reconstruction tool — to show real biological behavior without disturbing real wild animals or their habitat.
