Description
In 1942, an Ozark trapper named Roy Garrett ran a forty-mile trap line on foot, fed his family of seven through a war winter, and earned more from one season of furs than the local schoolteacher made in a year. He answered to nobody.
Today, every step he took would put him in a courtroom.
Before fluorescent camo, before scent blocker, before the multi-billion-dollar outdoor industry — your great-grandfather was the most efficient predator in his county. He did it with gear that cost less than a tank of gas costs today. And one by one, the skills he used got regulated, licensed, restricted, or quietly replaced.
In this video, we count down 25 hunting and trapping techniques that were once standard practice in rural America — the snares, deadfalls, calls, hand-fishing, ice spearing, hide tanning, and the one principle at #1 that almost no modern hunter still possesses.
This is not a how-to guide. It is a history lesson. Some of these techniques were given up for very good reasons. Some were displaced by commerce. All of them represent knowledge that lived in working hands two generations back and is fading fast today.

💬 Comment below: which skill did you pick? Did anyone in your family ever run a trap line, run dogs, or hand-fish for catfish?
⚠️ This video is historical and educational. All current hunting, fishing, and trapping activity should follow your state and federal regulations. Several practices discussed are illegal under modern wildlife law — they appear here as part of the historical record, not as instruction.
