Description

Johannesburg has no major natural river or lake, yet it powers the economic heart of Africa. To keep South Africa’s taps running, engineers conceived one of the most audacious civil engineering undertakings on the planet: the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). In this documentary, we trace the complete history of this multi-billion dollar treaty-backed megaproject—from its early origins and the iconic engineering of Phase I (Katse Dam, Mohale Dam, and the Muela Hydropower plant) to the ongoing frontier of Phase II. We explore the construction of the Polihali Dam, the massive 34km water transfer tunnel, and the monumental 825-meter Senqu River Bridge cutting through the Maloti Mountains. Yet, behind the concrete marvels lies a stark paradox: can billions of cubic meters of pristine mountain water save South Africa from its deepening urban water crisis, or is municipal pipe decay and bulk water leakage draining the solution faster than Lesotho can supply it?
