Description
In the summer of 1919 alone, 10,000 traveling tent events brought world-class lectures, debate, music, and theater to small towns across America — towns that otherwise had almost no access to outside ideas or culture at all. At its peak, this single movement drew an estimated 20 million people in one summer, across more than 9,000 towns. Today, almost nobody has ever heard the word that described it: Chautauqua.

This video counts down 25 real, documented facts about the traveling Chautauqua circuit (1904–1932) — how a Sunday school training program accidentally became a nationwide cultural phenomenon, why local towns had to personally guarantee ticket sales in advance, the most famous man who ever stepped onto a Chautauqua stage (you've definitely heard of him), two competing presidential candidates who once shared the same Chautauqua stage, and the exact technology that wiped out the entire movement within a single decade.
Drawn from university archives, published histories, and contemporary newspaper accounts — including an honest correction of a famous quote usually (and probably incorrectly) attributed to Theodore Roosevelt.
