Description
A harbor seal, a pod of hunting orcas, and a photographer's boat in the Salish Sea — what looks like a simple rescue story is actually a window into how prey animals make split-second survival decisions.
In this video, we break down a real, documented case: wildlife photographer Charvet Drucker filmed a seal leaping onto her boat mid-hunt off Camano Island, Washington, in November 2025, as a pod of at least eight orcas used a coordinated "wave-washing" technique to try to knock it back into the water. We use this case — alongside a second documented incident off British Columbia — to ask a deeper question: is the seal really seeking out humans, or is it simply choosing the least dangerous option available in that instant?
We explore predator-prey behavior, relative risk, learning, and why animals don't need to trust us to end up near us. No overblown claims — just what the evidence actually supports, and where the real uncertainty still lies.
