Description

How did the first practical jet engines go from experimental machines to actually powering an aircraft through the sky? In the 1930s, two engineers working independently in two different countries were chasing the same revolutionary idea. Britain had Frank Whittle. Germany had Hans von Ohain. Frank Whittle believed aircraft could fly without relying on a propeller. His idea was to pull air into an engine, compress it, mix it with fuel, burn it, and use the high-speed exhaust to create thrust. In 1936, Power Jets Ltd. was formed to help turn Whittle's ideas into a working experimental engine. Then came April 12, 1937. Whittle's experimental gas-turbine engine was tested. Air entered through the intake and was compressed by a centrifugal compressor. Fuel burned inside the combustion system, producing hot expanding gases that drove a turbine connected back to the compressor. The engine ran. But the test quickly became frightening when the engine accelerated beyond the speed Whittle and his team expected. Despite the problems, the experiment demonstrated that Whittle's turbojet concept could operate as a real engine. But Britain wasn't alone. In Germany, Hans von Ohain was independently developing his own jet propulsion system. Aircraft manufacturer Ernst Heinkel supported von Ohain's work, allowing his team to develop and test increasingly advanced engines. Soon, an unofficial technological race was underway. Whittle was developing jet propulsion in Britain. Von Ohain and Heinkel were pushing toward jet-powered flight in Germany. Then, on August 27, 1939, everything changed. Test pilot Erich Warsitz took control of the experimental Heinkel He 178. There was no conventional propeller producing its thrust. The aircraft accelerated down the runway, lifted into the air, and successfully flew under turbojet power. The Heinkel He 178 became the world's first aircraft to fly successfully using turbojet propulsion. Separate breakthroughs by Frank Whittle and Hans von Ohain helped open the door to an entirely new era of aviation: The Jet Age. In this video: • Frank Whittle and the early jet engine • Power Jets Ltd. • Whittle's 1937 experimental engine test • How an early turbojet engine worked • Centrifugal compressors and turbines • Hans von Ohain and German jet development • Ernst Heinkel and the race for jet-powered flight • Heinkel He 178 • Erich Warsitz • The historic August 27, 1939 flight • The first turbojet-powered aircraft • The beginning of the Jet Age • How jet propulsion changed aviation forever Two engineers. Two countries. One revolutionary idea. This is the story of the race that helped create the Jet Age. #JetEngine #AviationHistory #FrankWhittle #HansVonOhain #HeinkelHe178 #JetAge #Aviation #Turbojet #Engineering #HistoryDocumentary
