Description

Why did the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, a unique three-engine airliner, eventually disappear from commercial passenger service? 😱✈️ When the MD-11 was developed, three-engine aircraft had an important advantage for long-distance overwater routes because twin-engine aircraft faced stricter operating restrictions. The MD-11 used two engines under its wings and a third engine built into the tail. But as aviation technology improved, that advantage became a disadvantage. Three engines meant higher maintenance and operating costs. During testing, the aircraft also showed higher-than-expected fuel consumption, adding pressure on airlines. Then came the Boeing 777, a highly efficient twin-engine aircraft that received extended-range operating approvals. Airlines increasingly preferred the efficiency of two engines over the MD-11's three-engine design. Production of the MD-11 ended in 2001, after around 200 aircraft had been built. A fascinating example of how an aircraft's biggest advantage can eventually become its biggest weakness! 🤯✈️ #MD11 #McDonnellDouglas #Boeing777 #AviationFacts #AircraftHistory #AirplaneFacts #AviationTechnology #EngineeringFacts #YouTubeShorts #Shorts
