Overpick Mechanism In an overpick system, the picker stick is positioned above the path of the shuttle. This arrangement generally operates more efficiently and requires less power, making it common in many modern loom designs. 2. Underpick Mechanism In an underpick system, the picker stick is positioned below the shuttle path. Compared with the overpick arrangement, it is generally less efficient and requires more power. This type is often found on older power looms. How the Picker Stick Works The operation begins with the picking tappet, which rotates as it is driven by the loom’s bottom shaft. As the tappet rotates, its projecting nose comes into contact with a cone-shaped anti-friction roller mounted on the picking shaft. This contact causes the picking shaft to rotate. The picker stick, which is connected to the picking shaft, then swings rapidly across the loom. Its movement is transferred through the picking strap to the picker. The picker strikes the shuttle with the required force, sending it across the warp shed and allowing the weft yarn to pass through. Although it may look like a simple wooden component, the picker stick is essential to the smooth and precise operation of a power loom.
