Description

The world hasn’t changed, but the way we map it can. Following the UN’s September 2026 endorsement of equal-area maps, this animation compares Mercator with Equal Earth. Watch nine pairs of countries and regions change their apparent size. Learn why Mercator exaggerates areas farther from the equator, how Equal Earth preserves relative areas, and why different projections serve different purposes. Each pair uses a shared scale throughout its transformation. Countries’ actual areas do not change. Coastlines are simplified, Antarctica is omitted, and this is an independent illustration, not an official UN boundary map.
