Two P-traps from two kitchen sinks on the same street. One lined with an inch of grease, one clean after nine years. The difference is a two dollar monthly habit that converts grease on the pipe wall into something water carries away, instead of pushing it further down the line like the viral dish soap trick does.
A retired home inspector explains what a kitchen clog is actually made of and why it comes back in the same spot, the washing soda dose plumbers use and the four-part way it is run, the step most people do backwards, the three drains where it does nothing, the thirty-second test, and the catch: the first month on an old drain, when the dose can make things worse and why that is the right sign. Plus the honest line: the three times a plumber is the right call.
WHAT IS COVERED:
• Why grease clogs form at the first cool bend and return to the same spot
• Dish soap moves grease; washing soda converts it (saponification)
• Half a cup, dry, overnight, hot tap water after the powder, rinse in the morning
• Never boiling water into a plastic trap (212°F vs a ~140°F pipe rating)
• The grease can: the free habit that prevents most kitchen clogs
• Bathroom and shower drains are hair, not grease: the $3 drain hook
• An already-blocked sink gets the rescue first, the dose a week later
• Main line signs: two fixtures backing up, or a floor drain rising
• The first-month catch, and the rescue-then-weekly fix
• When the trap has to come off and get scraped
• Double sinks, disposals, septic tanks, enzyme cleaners, the vinegar fizz
PRICES AND SOURCES:
Washing soda (sodium carbonate): about $4–6 for a 55 oz box at most grocery and hardware stores; half a cup per dose works out to roughly $1–2 a month.
Drain clearing service visit: roughly $150–350 (Angi; HomeAdvisor), main line hydro-jetting and camera inspection well above that.
PVC drain pipe maximum service temperature about 140°F (manufacturer data for Schedule 40 PVC DWV).
SAFETY:
Washing soda is a strong alkali: no contact with eyes, rinse skin, keep away from children and pets, do not mix with vinegar, bleach or any commercial drain opener, and never pour it into a sink that still holds standing commercial drain cleaner. Hot tap water, not boiling, into plastic traps. Water backing up in two fixtures or a floor drain is a main line: that is a service call.
