Natembeya Is Right, Ruto Is Wrong? The Real Issue Behind the Trans Nzoia Clash Is Governor George Natembeya right to challenge President William Ruto over development projects in Trans Nzoia County? The disagreement has raised important questions about devolution, political branding and who deserves credit for projects funded by public resources. Natembeya has argued that the Masinde Muliro Market in Kitale was built using county government funds and support from the World Bank. He has challenged the President over plans to launch the facility, saying leaders should respect the responsibilities of county governments. The bigger question is whether a President attending a public project should be seen primarily as the Head of State representing all Kenyans or as a political leader associated with a particular party. In this commentary, we examine three issues: Public projects and political credit: Should leaders clearly acknowledge the institutions and taxpayers who financed a project? The presidency and party politics: Does the use of party colours and political mobilisation risk making public development appear to belong to one political party? Devolution and protocol: How should the President and elected governors coordinate when visiting counties and engaging in projects involving different levels of government? The argument is not that the President should be prevented from visiting or supporting development in any county. Rather, the question is whether public leadership should rise above party competition when serving citizens. Watch the analysis and share your view: Is Natembeya right to demand respect for county leadership, or is Ruto justified in intervening to deliver development projects?
