This World Hockey Association documentary explores the rise and fall of the WHA, one of the most fascinating stories in hockey history. The WHA shocked the hockey world by signing Bobby Hull away from the Chicago Blackhawks with a record-breaking contract, challenging teams like the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and the rest of the NHL during a dramatic battle for control of professional hockey. From its creation in 1971 to its collapse in 1979, the WHA was filled with incredible moments, classic games, franchise chaos, and unforgettable players. The league featured legends like Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, and eventually helped launch the careers of future NHL superstars like Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Mike Gartner. This NHL documentary looks back at the teams that defined the WHA, including the Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, Birmingham Bulls, Houston Aeros, and New England Whalers. We’ll explore the league’s battles with the NHL, its impact on player salaries, the arrival of European talent, and the merger that brought four WHA teams into the NHL. The WHA may have lasted only seven seasons, but its influence on hockey history is still felt today. It helped transform the NHL, opened the door for players from around the world, and created some of the most memorable stories in vintage NHL history. What do you think? Could a modern version of the WHA compete with the NHL today, or would the NHL shut it down before it became a serious threat? Let me know in the comments!
