Description
Janus (officially designated as ZTF J203349.8+322901.1) is a highly unusual white dwarf star located approximately 1,300 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. It was discovered in 2019 and nicknamed after the two-faced Roman god of transition because of its most striking astronomical feature: the star literally has two distinct, chemically different faces.
The Two Faces
Janus is the first white dwarf ever discovered with a sharply split surface composition.
The Hydrogen Side:
One entire hemisphere of the star is coated in hydrogen, appearing brighter and smoother.
The Helium Side: The opposite hemisphere is completely dominated by helium, which appears darker and bubbling with convection.
