Description

Description In the ruins of Stalingrad, 25 exhausted Soviet soldiers turned a shattered apartment building into one of the most famous defensive positions of World War II. Known as Pavlov’s House, the building stood in the middle of the Battle of Stalingrad for 58 days, as German forces attacked again and again. Outnumbered, surrounded, and running desperately low on food and ammunition, the defenders refused to give up. Led initially by Sergeant Yakov Pavlov, and later commanded by Lieutenant Ivan Afanasyev, the small garrison transformed the ruined building into a fortress. They created firing positions, mined entrances, connected the building to Soviet lines, and fought German infantry and tanks from inside the rubble. But the story behind Pavlov’s House is more complicated than the legend suggests. The famous name Pavlov’s House came from the first soldier to secure the building, while many of the men who actually defended it for weeks received far less recognition. This is the story of Pavlov’s House, the Battle of Stalingrad, and the small group of Soviet soldiers who refused to retreat when there was nowhere left to run. #battleofstalingrad #wwii #ww2history #militaryhistory #warhistory #historydocumentary
