Description

The first sixty pages of my mother's 1950 Betty Crocker hold no recipes at all, and there is a chapter at the back that no cookbook printed today has anywhere inside it. Here are the kitchen tricks that lived in old cookbooks and got cut out of the modern ones, and the reason each one went. I am Barbara Vance and that book has sat in my kitchen in Piqua, Ohio since my mother Ruth Ann died. Substitution tables. Can size charts. How much meat to buy per person. What to do when the gravy goes lumpy and the cake comes out sunk in the middle. Three of the things in that book are flatly wrong. Every woman in this county followed all three for forty years, and I followed two of them longer than I care to say. And if you set that book down and let go, it falls open at one page by itself, with pencil ticks running down the margin in my mother's hand. I will tell you what she meant by those at the end. Tell me in the comments what state you are watching from, and which cookbook stood on the shelf in the house you grew up in, along with whose name was written inside the cover. Four years of these written down, failures marked as failures. My daughter said nobody would buy it. I had it made into a book anyway #oldcookbooks #vintagerecipes #bettycrocker #oldfashionedcooking #kitchentips old cookbook tricks, vintage Betty Crocker 1950, forgotten kitchen skills, substitution chart, old can size numbers, how much meat per person, cake flour substitute, how to fix lumpy gravy, fallen cake, old cooking myths, pork cooking temperature
