What Really Happened To Chief Dan George — The Man Who Was Invisible For 60 Years
He spent 27 years loading lumber onto ships. The government took his name when he was five years old. He didn't act in anything until he was 60. And then he stood in front of 32,000 celebrating Canadians and told them their birthday was his funeral. This is the story of Chief Dan George — born Geswanouth Slahoot — a Tsleil-Waututh chief, longshoreman, poet, and the first Indigenous person ever nominated for an Academy Award. From residential schools to Hollywood, from a covered truck full of country music to the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, his life is one of the most remarkable stories you've never heard.
