Description

📘 Get the guide → The exact forms, phone scripts, and deadlines Social Security, Medicare, your bank & the IRS never explain in plain English: https://www.franklinlaw.shop October is the busiest month of the year for anyone on Social Security and Medicare, and this year it holds six real deadlines. It also arrives with noise — claims that your benefit is being cut in October, that you must verify your account or lose it, that a new rule is coming for your savings. Almost none of that is true. So this is a calendar: date by date, what is changing, who it reaches, and the one thing to do. 🔹 31 October — a savings deadline. I bond rates reset on 1 November, so buying by the end of October locks in the current rate for six months. If a CD matures, do not let it roll over automatically — banks often renew below their best rate. And interest counts as income: it affects how much of your Social Security is taxed and can raise your Medicare premium two years later. 🔹 Start now, finish by 31 December. Required minimum distributions for anyone 73 or older — miss one and the penalty is 25 percent, reduced to 10 if corrected. And for anyone 70½ or older who gives to charity, a distribution sent straight from the IRA to the charity counts toward the required withdrawal without adding to taxable income. 🔹 Ten minutes this month. Set up your own my Social Security account before somebody opens one in your name, and arrange direct deposit if you still get a paper check. Your notice for next year appears there before the letter arrives. 🔹 The October scam aimed at savings. A call, text or pop-up says your bank account has a problem. You are passed to a fraud department and told to move your savings to a safe account, withdraw cash, or buy gold for a courier — and to tell no one, not even your bank. All of it is a lie. No bank and no agency will ever ask you to move money to protect it or keep it secret. Deposits are insured to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category. 💡 Three things that are not happening: your benefit is not being cut in October · the automatic 4 percent Medicare cut was cleared away last November · and Social Security is not running out this year — the retirement fund is projected to run short in late 2032, at about 78 percent payable without action. 📞 Social Security 1-800-772-1213 · Medicare 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) · heating help: dial 211 · free Medicare counselling: your state SHIP · plan comparison: medicare.gov · your account: ssa.gov 📚 Sources: the U.S. Department of Agriculture (food assistance amounts and work rules) · the Social Security Administration (COLA, earnings limits, Trustees Report) · Medicare.gov and CMS (open enrollment, drug plan limits) · the Internal Revenue Service (extension deadline, senior deduction, RMDs, charitable transfers) · TreasuryDirect (savings bond rates) · the FDIC (deposit insurance). 🔔 Subscribe if you want the dates explained before they pass rather than after, and send this to someone who has been getting frightening messages about October. ⚠️ Disclaimer: general education, not legal, tax or financial advice, and not advice about your own situation.
