Nobody in the palace knows anything is wrong at all — and that is exactly the problem. A thousand miles away, a man casts sand across a board, reads his brother's death in it, and starts walking. He does not pack. He does not look back at the room. He crosses a desert on foot to a city he has never seen, to kill a boy he has never met, for a man he does not appear to have loved. He does not arrive with an army. He arrives with a question: who in that palace could walk through the front gate and never be searched? There is a holy woman in the low quarter. Seventy years old. A queue at her door every morning — a bad shoulder, a child's ear, a woman who has been told her son is cursed. She has never healed anybody. She just knows what people actually need, and says it plainly, and it is usually "boil the water." He sits down at her fire and asks her to teach him how she walks. Then the guards stand aside for her at the gate. Then Jasmine comes down the stairs herself, delighted, because she has heard of this woman since she was a child. Then the household loves her. Then Aladdin's own mother sits with her in the sun and tells her about her son, and about the years, and about being ill and then not being ill. The audience knows. The house does not. This is the part of the story almost every retelling deletes completely. There is no false Fatima in the Disney film. There is no brother. In the original One Thousand and One Nights the sorcerer's death is only the middle of the tale — what finishes it is a second man, quieter and far more patient, who kills a good woman in her own home and then wears her for a week.
