Description

You have seen college mascots before. Or at least you think you have. So nothing about the few minutes before kickoff at Folsom Field is going to prepare you for what comes through that gate. Fifty thousand people stand before the football team appears. Phones come out. A lane clears. Then the gate opens, and instead of a person in a costume, a live American bison charges onto the field with five students running beside her while the Colorado Buffaloes pour out behind them. Ralphie can move faster than twenty-five miles an hour. Her handlers train, condition, care for her, and can spend close to thirty hours a week preparing for a run that lasts only seconds. And if Ralphie does not want to run, or the team decides conditions are unsafe, the gate stays closed. This is the story of Ralphie, a Colorado tradition that began with a six-month-old bison bought for $150 in 1966 and became part of game day when she first led the team onto the field in 1967. Today, Ralphie VII — Brandy — carries that tradition forward, while a new generation of students earns the right to run beside her. For nearly sixty years, the animal has changed, the students have changed, and the generations in the stands have changed. The gate still opens. Ralphie still runs. And fifty thousand people still rise because they already know exactly what is coming.
