Description
This February, in the old seafront quarter of Vietri sul Mare — the first town on the Amalfi Coast — about fifty cubic meters of cliff let go, smashed into a home, and put six families out on the street in a single night. When officials inspected the slope, they found something worse than the slide: the base of the cliff had been hollowed out five to six meters, and the only coastal road was resting on rock that was being emptied from below. A few kilometers west sit some of the most desirable homes in Europe — the pastel villas of Positano, Praiano and Ravello that rent for thousands of euros a night. And this October, the sea in front of them is the hottest Mediterranean ever recorded, the slopes above them have burned, and a record El Niño is favored for the winter.
This is the full story of the five cracks running through the Amalfi Coast in 2026 — counted down from five to one, because the last one is the one the experts still can't agree on: the green shield that burned away before the rainy season even began, the sea that spent the summer loading the air with record heat, the cliffs being weighed down from above by saturated volcanic ash while the waves hollow them out from below, the insurance gap almost no villa owner knows they have — in a country where only 7% of homes are covered — and the unresolved fight that will decide this coastline for fifty years: hold the mountain with steel nets, or heal it with the terraces and farmers that protected it for centuries. From the forgotten flood of 1954 that killed 318 people and erased an entire village, to the one road the mountain keeps cutting in two.
🌊 Steel or soil — if you owned a villa on these cliffs, would you bolt nets to the rock, or pay to bring the old terraces back? And would the record El Niño change your answer? Tell me in the comments.
⚠️ A reporting/analysis video based on public records and NOAA, AEMET and university data; genuinely disputed points — including the El Niño link to Italy — are flagged as disputed, not presented as certainty.
