Description
Why do humans eat cows but not lions? For thousands of years, people have hunted, raised, and eaten herbivores like cattle, deer, and bison. But lion steaks, wolf ribs, and tiger burgers are almost never on the menu. Is carnivore meat dangerous, or is there a deeper reason behind one of humanity's oldest food choices?
Our story begins in Antarctica in 1912, when explorer Douglas Mawson and his companion Xavier Mertz survived on sled dogs during a disastrous expedition. After Mertz died, researchers later debated whether vitamin A toxicity from dog liver contributed to the tragedy. That mystery opens a much bigger question: why have humans so often preferred prey animals over predators?
In this ancient human history documentary, we explore what ecology, archaeology, food safety, and cultural traditions reveal about the meat our ancestors chose to eat.
You Will Learn in This Video:
🔹 The Hidden Dangers: How mercury can build up in certain predatory fish, and why parasites such as Trichinella make improperly cooked wild game risky.
🔹 The Energy Problem: Why food chains lose usable energy at each level, making large land carnivores generally less practical to raise for meat.
🔹 The Prehistoric Hunt: How dangerous predators compared with deer, horses, bison, and other animals that offered ancient hunters substantial food and useful materials.
🔹 Culture Shapes the Menu: Why food traditions and religious rules influence which animals different societies consider edible.
🔹 The Surprising Exceptions: Why humans regularly eat predatory fish, and how Arctic communities have long depended on marine animals for survival.
We also examine archaeological evidence that Neanderthals sometimes butchered lions and bears. The answer isn't that all carnivore meat is poisonous. It is that availability, risk, energy costs, preparation, and tradition shape what ends up on our plates.
