Description

Why did humans start sleeping beside a partner — and was romance actually the reason? Long before bedrooms, mattresses, and private homes, our ancestors slept in a very different world. Night meant darkness, cold, predators, children nearby, shared fires, and other members of the group sleeping only a few feet away. In this video, we explore what archaeology, anthropology, and evolutionary research can tell us about how ancient humans slept, why long-term pair bonds developed, and how cooperation, childcare, warmth, protection, attachment, and trust may have shaped the way humans spend the night. From prehistoric bedding and hunter-gatherer sleeping patterns to the evolution of human couples, the evidence points to a surprising possibility: maybe humans never had to learn to sleep together. Maybe sleeping near other people came first — and sleeping apart is the newer invention. This video is based on archaeological and anthropological research. Scientists cannot identify a specific moment when the first human couple began sleeping together, and some explanations discussed are evolutionary hypotheses rather than directly observable prehistoric behavior.
