Description
You said something. They twisted it. You defended yourself. They twisted that too. You explained more. They twisted that. Two hours later, you were apologizing for something you never actually did, and they were the ones acting hurt.
That is not you being emotional. That is not you being confused. That is not you being too sensitive. That is a specific game called gaslighting. And you have been losing at it because nobody ever told you the rules of the game.
Gaslighters are not smarter than you. They just know one thing you do not know yet. Every explanation you give them becomes their next weapon. Every defense you offer becomes their next attack. The game only works if you keep playing. And you have been playing for years.
Machiavelli understood this centuries ago: "The one who defends themselves before a person committed to misunderstanding them only builds a longer rope for their own hanging."
There is one way to crush a gaslighter. It is not to argue better. It is to stop arguing at all.

This chapter is particularly relevant to the video's themes of maintaining respect, avoiding contempt, appearing resolute, and preventing others from taking advantage of perceived weakness.
Chapter 20 — “Whether Fortresses, and Many Other Things to Which Princes Often Resort, Are Profitable or Hurtful”
Machiavelli discusses security, public perception, and the limits of relying on external defenses rather than maintaining the right relationship with those around you.
