Description
Two American battleships. Sixteen-inch guns. One Japanese destroyer trying to escape the shattered base at Truk. On paper, Admiral Raymond Spruance's order looked like pure overkill.
But the famous story of Operation Hailstone is far more complicated than two massive warships chasing a single fleeing target. What did Spruance actually see that made this decision necessary?
In February 1944, Task Force 58 turned Japan's supposedly untouchable Pacific fortress into a burning trap. When surviving Japanese ships attempted to break out of the lagoon, the battle shifted from an air raid to a desperate surface race. This video separates the legend from the operation itself, exploring why Spruance chose certainty and overwhelming force over caution.
